Home food, vegetarian diets & myths
Dogs can manage varied diets with care, but cats are obligate carnivores — they need nutrients like taurine that come from animal sources. A vegetarian diet for a cat is a genuine health risk and should never be attempted without veterinary supervision. Home-cooked diets for either species need to be properly balanced to avoid deficiencies.
Cats need milk every day.
Most adult cats are lactose-intolerant. Milk causes stomach upsets — fresh water is what they need.
Home food is automatically complete.
Loving, home-cooked meals can still miss key nutrients unless deliberately balanced.
Dogs shouldn't eat eggs.
Cooked eggs are a safe, useful protein for most dogs — in sensible amounts.
"A lot of what I treat as 'digestion problems' is really feeding habits — too many table scraps, milk given daily, or a sudden switch between home food and kibble. Small, consistent changes fix most of it."
